Orkney Auction Mart is delighted to announce that, from our recent recruitment drive to find a Livestock Fieldsman/General Worker, we have employed two new staff members.
George Low is well known on the Young Farmers scene having most recently served his time as East Mainland Young Farmers' Chairman, and has now moved into a new position as Secretary for the Orkney District Association of Young Farmers - a challenging and demanding role.George has competed nationally in speechmaking and stock judging events in which he has had success at the Royal Highland Show winning the beef individual trophy in 2018 and the beef pair trophy in 2016 & 2018.With a good eye for stock, George has also been involved with dressing and showing cattle at local agricultural shows as well as Young Farmer events held at the Mart.George has his own herd of 16 Simmental cross cows just outside Kirkwall. He is passionate about agriculture and producing the best stock that Orkney can.George will concentrate on procurement initially and may decide later to try his hand at auctioneering.
George Brown has also joined the team. For the past 20 years he has been involved in the butchery trade with the last 17 years spent working at Craigie Butchers. He has a tremendous knowledge of the deadweight side of the livestock industry and is now very keen to learn the live market side as well.
George was born at Colligarth, Sanday, and grew up helping on the family farm and still helps out when returning to Sanday for weekends and holidays.
He has a passion to be involved in the auctioneering side of the business and will be enrolling on the LAA approved course, Livestock Market Operations and Management in January 2020 in order to progress further in this role.
They are both looking forward to meeting all of our customers and visiting farms on a regular basis.
“It’s great news to be able to add two new members to the team that will enhance the very important procurement side of the business. It’s also exciting to find someone with the ambition to learn the ropes as an auctioneer. With their drive and determination to succeed I’m sure they with both prove to be great assets to the company.” Malcolm Scott, Manager, Orkney Auction Mart
