Wednesday saw the Orkney Bull Breeders Association Show and Sale take place in The Mart with some great quality Bulls on offer. Standing in the judging ring today was Mr Kevin Harvey, Vestrafiold, Sandwick, who handled proceedings with ease as he selected his breed Champions.1st in the judging ring were the Simmental Bulls which saw the Champion being awarded to Lot 1 “Isbister Max” bred by A T Rendall, Old Hall, Stromness. This powerful Bull created a lot of interest at sale time and went on to realise 5,000gns to S W Scott, Appiehose, Stenness.2nd in the judging ring was the Aberdeen Angus class, where “Burnside Black Magic” was awarded Champion. This bull was bred by P M Harcus, Messigate, Tankerness and later sold for 3,600gns to G & M Thomson, East Massater, South Ronaldsay. Reserve Champion went to “Burnside Elvis” who was again bred by P M Harcus, Messigate, Tankerness. This Bull was unsold at sale time.Next into the ring was a high standard of Limousin Bulls. Champion Limousin was Lot 5 “Hewan Scarab” bred by R & J Johnston, Hewan, Shapinsay. This Bull caught the eye of multiple bidders and later sold for 3,700gns to Colligarth Farms, Sanday. Standing Reserve in the Limousin class was Lot 6 “Dwarmo Sambucca” bred by M & R Cursiter, Arwick, Evie. This bull created a lot of brisk bidding and was purchased by West Brough Farms, Sanday for 3,800gns. 3rd prize Limousin Bull was awarded to Lot 7 “Dwarmo Surprise” again bred by M & R Cursiter, Arwick, Evie. This Bull went on to fetch 3,200gns to J & C Spence, Eastabist, Dounby.Finally in the ring were the Charolais Bulls, which had two strong, well-bred bulls. Champion Charolais went to Lot 8 “Baillieston Sam” bred by W R Baillie, Biggings, Toab who generated a lot of interest in the sale ring and later went on to realise 5,600gns to T & M Seatter, Hammer, Westray. Standing reserve in the Charolais class was Lot 9 “Messigate Sam” bred by A Harcus, Messigate, Tankerness. This bull was also in high demand and sold to 4,000gns again to T & M Seatter, Hammer, Westray.The aged Bulls also created some brisk bidding with nearly all the Bulls being sold. Top price Aged bull was “Newbigging Esquire” bred by B & S Slater, Newbigging, Dounby. This cracking 5 year old Aberdeen Angus Bull sold for 5,000gns to C & C E B Leslie, Lopness, Sanday. Another Angus Bull sold was “Westshore Edgar” bred by A B & J A Fraser, Westshore, Rendall which sold for 3,500gns to RSPB, Egilsay. Another Angus Bull was “Baillieston Leader” shown by R & N Bremner, Kirbuster, Stronsay which sold for 2,900gns to G & M Spence, Hyval, Sandwick.”Messigate Radiant”, an aged Charolais Bull from A Harcus, Messigate, Tankerness went on to realise 4,400gns to C S Craigie, Dale, Stromness. “Kilbride Farm Highlier” was an aged Simmental from R & N Bremner, Kirbister, Stronsay which sold for 1,850gns to L Savage, Braeside, Orphir. “Queenamoan Novak” was an aged Shorthorn Bull shown by B & S Slater, Newbigging, Dounby realising 1,700gns to D Taylor, Hall of Herston, South Ronaldsay.Three of the Four aged Limousin Bulls on offer managed to sell. “Strawfrank Oriel” shown by A T & C R Rosie, Heather-Cow-Root, Flotta sold for 2,000gns purchased by D J Moar, Vinbrake, Birsay. Another Bull which realised 2,000gns was “Anside Nigel” from J & C Spence, Eastabist, Dounby which was bought by N & A Kemp, Moa, Stenness. Finally, “Hools Nathan” shown by J S Seatter, Perth, Westray sold for 1,650gns to G Low, Craighaven, Toab.On behalf of all the Bull Breeders, we wish all the buyers the best of luck with their purchases.Following the Bulls was the complete dispersal of spring calving cows from R W Flaws, Nisthouse, Evie, along with many other vendors. The full ringside of local and south buyers created a brisk trade which resulted in a 100% clearance.
