Young Farmers Show

The Young Farmers Show took place on Sunday 8th April 2018 with 23 over wintered cattle on show which were purchased by the young farmers throughout the backend of 2017. Also for Show were 6 Homebred Cattle.
We would like to thank Northlink Ferries again this year for their generous sponsorship and continued support of this event.
The Judge this year was Mr Harry Emslie Kinnochie Farm Mintlaw Peterhead.

The main winners on the evening were as follows;
The Overall Champion was No 12 a Limousin Heifer shown by Gary Stanger South Seatter Sandwick. The black heifer was not only the Overall Champion but she was the Weight gain Champion as well putting on 1.27 kg per day. She was bred by Housebay Farms Stronsay

At the sale today she realised £2700 and was purchased by the judge Harry Emslie.
Bought weight 470 kilos, Sold weight 700 kilos + 230 kilos (181 days)
Price paid £1090, Sold Price £2700 + £1610
The Reserve Champion was a Limousin Heifer shown by Inga Kemp. She was bred by G T & S Coghill Muce Birsay. She was also very close to winning the weight gain trophy as she put on 1.26 kgs per day.

Inga was also presented with the prize for best Young Handler at the Show.
At the sale today the heifer realised £1700 and was again purchased by the judge Harry Emslie.

The Champion Steer at the show was a Limousin shown by Kelsey Harvey Lyra Dounby. It was bred at Hools South Ronaldsay.

Today the steer realised £1350 and was purchased by Craigie Butchers Ltd Brig Larder Kirkwall

The most weight gain steer was an unhaltered Limousin from Dale Groundwater Hyval Cottage Dounby

The Stot was purchased by Craigie Butchers Ltd Brig Larder Kirkwall
The Overall Homebred Champion was a Limousin Steer from Owen Rendall Rowland Holm

Today the Steer sold for £1280 to W Anderson Aberdeenshire

The large number of spectators at the event on Sunday night showed just how important it is to support the Young Farmers in Orkney.
Well done to all who took part this year and we look forward to next year”s event with hopefully some new faces having a go!
